To rent a car in Latvia, you must be at least 21 years old and have held your driving license for a year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.
Travelling in a rental car into other countries may be possible by special request and may incur additional fees and/or insurance.
In Latvia, driving is on the right and overtaking on the left. Seatbelts are required for all passengers. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5‰.
When driving, you must always have the headlights on.
If there are two white lines in the centre of the road, then overtaking is illegal.
In towns and villages, it is illegal to use the horn unless you are in a dangerous situation.
It is advisable to use guided parking facilities because of a high incidence of vehicle theft and pilfering. In the centre of the town, there are usually parking meters and you have to obtain a disc or ticket. Do not park where the curb is painted yellow. Illegally parked cars will be wheel-clamped.
If you violate the traffic laws, you have to pay the fine at a bank.
